The MVCTC Adult Education project was managed by our partner and friend, Sheri Noer from blueRHINO Marketing and Event Promotions.  When we first encountered the MVCTC Adult Ed site, it was an aging static html site that had become a maze of confusing and broken navigation.  And the staff at MVCTC Adult Ed had no administrative control, so they were unable to update their own content.  So in 2007, we rebuilt it using the Joomla 1.0 platform – which delivered a much-improved navigation structure and an administrative interface that could be managed by the MVCTC Adult Ed staff.  However, by 2009, they were ready for another facelift, so we rebuilt the site again using the newer Joomla 1.5 platform.

The biggest challenge at the MVCTC Adult Education site was how to organize a large database of content.  Their course offerings include Full Time and Short Term study programs (each with their own admissions and financial aid processes), 25 separate short-term course categories, and hundreds of individual course offerings.  Presenting all of this information in a logical format that could be navigated and understood by an uninitiated audience was not easy, but we came up with a content structure that works well.

We employed a limited number of interactive applications at the new MVCTC Adult Ed site, including a dynamic event calendar (to track their many assessment tests and other official events), a document attachment component (they like their Adobe pdf documents, at MVCTC), and a sophisticated user management component that allows administrators to approve user accounts (so that some content and tools could be available only to students and staff).

And of course, the new site is very search-engine friendly, as it includes a complete set of title and meta tags, search-engine-friendly URLs, and dynamic site mapping.

We are hopeful that the MVCTC Adult Education staff will continue to take advantage of the capabilities of their Joomla site and will expand it even further with the many dynamic PHP and SQL applications that can be developed around the open-source framework.
